Things
may be changing at Visioneer: See this press
release about their acquisition of TWAIN experts JFL
Peripheral Solutions, and appointment of Jon Harju as Senior VP
of Engineering. Jon is a world-class TWAIN expert, long a leading
contributor in the TWAIN community and the TWAIN Working Group. We
do not know what change Jon will be able to effect, but we are cautiously
optimistic.
For now, we cannot recommend any Visioneer scanners other than the Strobe XP-450 (see comments below). Visioneer started life as a company focused on
consumer document management, tightly integrating a small-footprint
scanner with a powerful software package called PaperPort. TWAIN
was, if anything, counter to their corporate strategy. Visioneer
now markets an extensive line of scanners to both consumer and office
markets, but Visioneer's TWAIN drivers have consistently been some of the
worst of any major scanner vendor we work with. (But see also: Hewlett-Packard,
VIDAR.)
Before buying any imaging device, we recommend that you Google for
<company name> + "tech support", and that you Google for the device,
using the vendor and model name. Many serious problems with scanners
emerge only after some weeks or months of use, and even a highly-respected
brand can produce a very disappointing scanner.

| issues: |
OneTouch
4800: Severe TWAIN issue - native transfer does not work.
Strobe XP-200: Severe TWAIN issue -In No-UI mode, feeder runs backward.
It's a wreck.
9450: Ignores CAP_FEEDERENABLED, feeds from ADF if possible, otherwise
scans bed. Many capabilities return invalid values.
8650: CAP_FEEDERENABLED does not work.
These problems are probably not confined to these specific models.
We have unconfirmed reports of fatal errors under some circumstances,
using EZTwain Pro with some Visioneer models. |
