Recommendations
Below
are some very general recommendations about selecting hardware for
control with Dosadi software. Our Acquire product is built on our
EZTwain Pro library, so they have similar compatibility. The comments
below do not take account of the particular type of document or
original you are scanning, issues about image quality or fidelity,
the number of documents to be scanned (per day or per month), your
desired price range, and so on. We always encourage developers to
contact us before selecting hardware, to discuss your specific
requirements. Also see our hardware vendor
pages.
Flatbeds:
Our software rarely fails to work smoothly with any flatbed, however
if you plan to automate scanning (hide the scanner's user interface)
then there is wide variation in controllable features. Please
contact us to discuss specifics.
ADF
(Automatic Document Feeder) Units: For general scanning of multipage
documents, or multiple single-page documents, we recommend the Canon
'DR' series. In the under-1000$ range the Canon 2080C looks particularly
promising. We also recommend the Fujitsu ADF scanners, with the
fi-4120C being a well-liked model at the low end.
Webcams:
Like flatbeds, these generally work well when their 'capture' dialog
is displayed. But - if you plan to do program-controlled capture,
very few of them will work - we don't recommend automatically
capturing frames from webcams using TWAIN. We suggest using Video
for Windows, DirectShow, or WIA.
Digital
Still Cameras: If you allow the camera to display its user interface,
these will all work well. If you want to download photos or trigger
snapshots under program control, you will be disappointed.
If you require automatic control of a digital camera, we recommend
lMicrosoft's WIA, a vendor toolkit, or for FireWire (IEEE 1394),
there is a Digital Camera Protocol for which you can find software
on the World Wide Web.
